3rd WUKO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Guadalajara, Mexico

20th - 22nd November 2009

Dear friends,
In spite of the great effort of our friends Virginia Seebaran and Darryl Williams, we found significant logistics difficulties in organizing the next Wuko World Championship scheduled in Trinidad & Tobago from the 23rd to the 25th October.

Grand Prix

The participant nations noted that the flight to T&T is really expensive and also the other general expenses on the isle are not compatible with the world financial crisis afflicting every nation. It is a duty of our organization to make its best to meet the interests of its members halfway. As a result we tried to find another location, more accessible and within the reach of all Wuko member nations.

The 1st Wuko Open Caribbean Cup will take place in Trinidad & Tobago in 2010.The World Championship moves instead to Guadalajara, second Mexico city, easily accessible from all over the world. The city of Guadalajara will sponsor the event and guarantees special conditions regarding accommodations, dinners, transfers and general expenses.

From the Championship location it is possible to reach the wonderful Mexican coast on the Pacific for a contingent holiday in Acapulco or Cabo San Lucas, Cancun, Puerto Vallarta.

The Championship will take place from the 20th to the 22nd November 2009. Amekas, the Mexican federation headed by the North America Wuko Chairman Victor Manuel Enriquez Gamino, has the task to organize the Championship and will send in a few days the details of the event.

Thanks another time to Virginia and Darryl for their job and see you all in Mexico for a great World Championship!

TECHNICAL INNOVATIONS: KATA

Among the main technical innovations there is the introduction of the Annan kata among the Tokui kata, for all styles recognized by the Wuko. The kata is of Indian origin and from now on can be performed in the competitions by all the athletes, regardless of their style. A "common" kata is an absolute innovation, which supports particularly those styles, which don't have many official kata in their list. This will be also a great innovation for all masters that want to teach something really new in their gyms. The Wuko will promote the Annan kata in the stages of its Advisers and the day before the Continental and World Championships.

1st WUKO EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

CHILDREN, CADETS & JUNIORS
IMPERIA (Italy) 12th/13th/14th JUNE 2009

The magnificent sports hall of Imperia, between Sanremo and Genoa, welcomed the 1st European Wuko Championships Children, Cadets e Juniors with a wonderful crown: almost 5000 spectators in two days. The Fesik thanks the Imperia chairman of the sport, Marco Scajola, and the major Paolo Strescino for the backing and the logistics support and compliments the minister  Claudio Scajola, a politician, who has completely improved the city of Imperia that nowadays is really an up-and-coming tourist centre of the Ligurian Riviera. Many thanks also to the epoch-making company Olio Carli, present with gifts for Italians and foreign teams. 13 nations took part to the event: FESIK Italy, ASBTP France, KIE England, SKA Scotland, NKAS Scotland, FKSI, Switzerland, PKMA Poland, NDR Russia, IOFKS Russia, IMAL Russia, RSKCS Russia, IFSK Russia, DWKA Germany.
38 referees attended the Wuko Course. The freshness was given by the participation of one of the most famous French referees in the world: Pierre Perez, 6th dan. He refereed 3 finals of the Wkf World Championships. Perez showed to be the best for real: confidence, essentiality and total impartiality. At the end of the stage the President Henke appointed him Wuko Referees Commissioner: Perez will direct referees together with the Competition Director Andrea Lotti, a peerless technician in his role all over the world. The Russian Boris Sprikacev and the Italians Enzo Ferri and Giuseppe Mandara qualified as Chief Referees, while Paolo Mammarella and Romolo Manicone are now Senior Referees. Among the best ones: the Swiss Mario Campise, the Scottish Bill Hair and Grant Wyper, the French Drijaca Predrag, the South African Michael Kliment, the Russians Boris Sprikacev, Julia Pavlova and Pavel Gorozhankin and the Italians Antonio Rollo, Piergiovanni Matuozzo, Giuseppe Ghisalberti, Ugo Botti and Pietro Dall’Olmo.
Let’s speak about the competition. The presence of the Italians athletes was strong as usual, but the foreign squads were numerous and technically fit: the best was the French team of Didier Chiarla and the Russian team of Boris Skripachev. We speak only about the best ones: unfortunately it is impossible to cover almost 1000 athletes.

Juniors: in the kumite the French Daniel Syby is a real champion. He conquered the title eatine the Italian Rega. Very good were also the Italians D’Ippolito, Pannuti, Cerulo and Latini among men, Eleonora Galizzi and Lucia Mari among women. In the kata the Italian school showed its supremacy: Carlotta Zanello was another time in evidence in the Goju, while in the Shoto it was a great day for Cristiana Rossi, who wan the gold medal beating the fellow countrywoman Ester Gemma and the Scottish Samantha Birrel. The title went also to Morrys Guerra and, in the Shito, Arianna Pirovano was formidable. Cadets: Mirko De Angelis was good in the kumite, the match between the Italian Adriano D’Ippolito and the French Elharti was absorbing: the first one wan for 6 wazari to 5. In the Ippon the Scottish David Carter outdistanced the Italian Andrea Di Mario, but Italy took its revenge in the mixed team kumite: 2-1 to Scotland. In the kata the Italians Cristina Brambilla in the Shotokan and Roberta Annunziata in the Shito ryu were very good. Youth: the match between Rofidal and the Italian Drago was excellent with the French as winner. France repeated itself in the women’s category with Amelie Decroyere, who defeated the Italian Giulia Poletti in the final. France wan the gold medal also among the 6-8 years old with Anthony Ridavet outdistancing the Italians Pastorino, Curcio and Logambino. In the 9-11 years old Fany Miceli conquered the title and also in the 11-12 years old Oceane Guaresì confirmed the excellence of the French school, which wan also with Marjane Hasmari. The match between the Italian Luca Olivieri and the Russian Alexander Novikov was exciting. The second one wan and conquered the silver medal also in the kata, after the team-mate Sergey Vatagin. Very good were also the Italians Nicola Cresio and Arianna Potzolu, who outdistanced the French Margaux Fabre and Cloe Fabrin. The Scottish Emma Hedley wan the bronze but it is a Russian the best athlete of the Youth category: Dimitry Ponyatovsky is really exceptional: he wan the gold medal with 48,2 against 46,5 of the second. EUROPEAN CONTINENTAL CHILDREN, CADETS & JUNIORS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Regarding the European Continental Children, Cadets & Juniors Championships, we noticed that the hotels in La Spezia are too expensive. To help the participating nations we decided to move the competition to Imperia, another location near to Genova but closer to the airport: next week Fesik will give al information regarding transfer and hotel rates to all the participating nations. Also the date has been changed: the championships will be held a week before because on the 12th, 13th and 14th June in Imperia, a touristy city in front of the sea, is still low season and the prices are significantly lower.
The Palasport of Imperia is completely new and located directly on the sea: the championship promises well and will give to all participants the possibility to take some day off in addition to the sports event.
The complete programme, including the hotel prices, will be published within the 20th March, the first day of spring. For the moment we confirm the ultimate location and date:

IMPERIA (Genova) Italy

- Friday 12th June:      Enrolments check, Referee Course

- Saturday 13th June:  Kata and Kumite competition

- Sunday 14th June      Kata and Kumite competition

Iran is one of the strongest karate organization in the world: the Iran Karate Federation, the official organization that will play the Fesik Italy in a friendly match next April, is Champion of Asia: the Wuko Middle East is becoming always stronger.

NORTH AMERICA, AFRICA AND ASIA:

WUKO CHAIRMANS AND DELEGATES

At the moment there are three Continental Chairmen appointed by the Wuko: Victor Manuel Enriquez, 6th dan, President of the OLAKA, Organizacion Latino Americana de Karatedo for North America,  Michael Kliment, 5th dan, President of the JSKA Japan Shotokan Karate South Africa for Africa and Selvaraj Kothandan, 7th dan, President of the AIKSKF, All India Kokino Shito-ryu Karate Federation for Asia. The ones for Oceania and Europe are still missing: they will be appointed after the Wuko Continental & World Championships.
Also the Wuko Delegates, one for every member nation, will be appointed after the Continental & Wold Championships: at present only Ronnie Colwell, 8th dan, one of the most appreciated and fairest British technician, and  Gustavo Esteban Zupan, 4th dan, president of Aka, was chosen.

TRINIDAD & TOBAGO :

CONGRESS

The Wuko Congress will take place in Trinidad & Tobago the day before the World Championship. To the Congress will take part all member organizations affiliated for the year 2009. They will ratify the appointments and elect the WUKO-DC. The Agenda will be notified as soon as possible.

KATA:

TECHNICAL INNOVATIONS

Among the main technical innovations there is the introduction of the Annan kata among the Tokui kata, for all styles recognized by the Wuko. The kata is of Indian origin and from now on can be performed in the competitions by all the athletes, regardless of their style. A "common" kata is an absolute innovation, which supports particularly those styles, which don't have many official kata in their list. This will be also a great innovation for all masters that want to teach something really new in their gyms. The Wuko will promote the Annan kata in the stages of its Advisers and the day before the Continental and World Championships.

COMPETITIONS:

CATEGORIES, AGE AND WEIGHTS

For the year 2009 the Wuko will do only the Continental Championships Children, Cadets and Juniors in La Spezia (Italy) and the World Championships Seniors and Veterans in Trinidad & Tobago.
The rule is:

  • Even years: Children, Cadets & Juniors World Championship and Seniors and Veterans Continental Championship;
  • Odd years: Seniors and Veterans World Championship and Children, Cadets and Juniors Continental Championship.

We remark that in the juvenile kata competitions the thirteen- and fourteen-year-olds and the Cadets can compete also in the upper categories. Whereas in all the kumite competitions the athletes must compete in their category.
Starting from the year 2010 we will have something new: on a world, continental or national level every Wuko member state will have the possibility to organize the Wuko Clubs Open Championship. The competition will be open to all the clubs and will include all the categories (Children, Cadets, Juniors and Seniors - kata & kumite, women & men), regardless of their federation even if it is not a Wuko member. Only the Clubs can take part to this Championship and not the national teams of the Wuko member states.
For the national competitions it will be the Wuko delegate to decide, for the continental ones the Continental Chairman, for the world competitions the Wuko-DC. An insurance cover is compulsory for the organizer.
This initiative intends to show the openness of the Wuko towards all the federations and the athletes, in the name of a unifying karate and not of a dividing one.
On the web page "Competition rules" and "Categories" you can find all the changes to the Wuko rules, while in the NEWS of March you will find all the programmes and the information (hotels etc.) for the Juniors Championship and in the ones of April those for the World Championship in Trinidad & Tobago.
